Ficlet: Mon Ami (G) Tracker Tag
Yes, I know I said no more fics, but I couldn't stop this one. It's the result of just one of my reactions to "Tracker," which I have to admit I'm terribly conflicted about. I wrote my thoughts down yesterday, but with my already gloomy mood, thought better of posting. Once I get my feelings and emotions in a more cohesive place, perhaps I'll post it. This piece is just a simple conversation among friends, a very subtle, very nuanced conversation that I think, for all its brevity, says a good deal.

Title: Mon Ami (My Friend)
Characters: John Sheppard, Ronon Dex
Rating: G
Words: ~500
Warnings/Spoilers: Tag for Tracker
Summary: "Why don't you just tell him? Ronon asked, his rumbling voice too harsh for such innocently straightforward words.

Mon Ami

The door to his quarters slid open and he looked up expectantly. Hot adrenaline sliced through his belly and then dissipated, leaving a hollow ache. It was Ronon.

"Hey."

John eyed him for a moment. "Hey." He searched Ronon's face for any sign that the discovery of another runner had affected him. "Interesting couple of days."

Ronon grunted.

"At least Celise is gonna be all right.  Kyrik escaped. Hopefully, Keller shorted out the device for good. Maybe one day we'll—"

"Doesn't change the fact that they're still out there, the Wraith are still doing this."

"You mean runners."

Ronon stared, then pointed to John's beer. "You got another one of those?"

"Sure." John cocked his head in the direction of the mini-fridge. "Help yourself." He watched Ronon stride over and pull a can out of the six-pack.  He studied his complicated friend as he returned and sat down beside the bed.  A pleasant silence hung between them for a moment as they drank. "And Keller," John began.

"She was amazing," Ronon said with a hint of a smile, and then he turned to John. "I would have gone anyway, you know."

John measured him from beneath heavy eyelids and scrunched brows, then nodded and took a sip of his beer. He looked away, but still Ronon's gaze pressed in on him.

"Why don't you just tell him?" Ronon asked, his rumbling voice too harsh for such innocently straightforward words.

John turned back. Innocent maybe, but he didn't think much escaped the scrutiny of this man. He fumbled with his half-empty can, drawing circles around the rim with his thumb. "Remember that thing I told you about once… the military regulations? A person in military service can't… discuss his or her sexual orientation or preferences."

Ronon looked at him blankly.

"I can't," John clarified. "It'd mean my command if anyone found out."

"But Sheppard, you—"

"I can't," he repeated.

"That's dumb," Ronon stated after a moment.  And he sounded for all the world like a pouting eight year-old.

John snorted. "Among other things. Yes, it's… dumb," he agreed. "But it is what it is. Besides, Keller seems to be a bigger draw." As soon as the words left him, he realized how petty they sounded and he hoped Ronon wasn't nuanced enough to have noticed.

"Yeah, I just had a talk with McKay."

"Hmm." John's voice was flat and sounded, he hoped, disinterested.

"He asked if I had... intentions... with Jennifer."

John glanced at him and cocked an eyebrow. "Do you?"

There was no mistaking his smile this time. "Yep. Told him I did."

John took another sip, hoping to stop the question that burned on his tongue. "Really? What'd he say?"

They stared at one another before Ronon answered.  "Said he wasn't gonna step aside, that it would be Jennifer's decision... may the best man win."

John nodded slowly.  Ronon finished his beer and crushed the can, which brought a fond grin to John's face. "You're gonna turn on the ol' Dex charm, are you?"

Ronon's eyes twinkled under his dark brows. He stood up. John stood, too, and offered his hand. "Well good luck, buddy," he said.  And he meant it… with every last hope he had, he meant it.

I agree, I keep seeing his face in that first sequence. :(

He really loves to sacrifice, doesn't he? *rough sigh* This was really good, but hopefully wasn't painful to write! *hugs*
neevebrody[info]neevebrody on September 22nd, 2008 08:05 pm (UTC)
The look on his face at the end of that first segment, before he walked away... that was John recognizing that there was something out of his control. This isn't his sacrifice, although in a way it is by not telling Rodney how he feels, but realistically he can't and at this point, even if he was wavering, there is the real possibility (in John's mind I think) that Rodney would reject him.

That 45 second opening sequence was the most painful thing I've ever seen with regard to SGA. I explain more about my thoughts in my review (which hopefully I'll post soon), but the other thing I saw in that look was hurt and this piece was written "because" it was painful and the only way I knew of to get it out of me.

*hugs back*

Gah, my poor punkin. This is why I can't bear to watch any more of the season. I just love John so much and he just loves Rodney so much. ;_;
neevebrody[info]neevebrody on September 22nd, 2008 08:09 pm (UTC)
Well, at first I refused to watch the rest of the episode. I'd only watched the opening. I finally did skim through it and was really taken with the Kiryk and thought his story was interesting. It's just the schizophrenic way they're piecing the shows together and writing character interaction. We're only two weeks (however long that is in SGA time) away from The Shrine and here's Rodney acting like a total asshole to John. And I've never thought that about Rodney, but he was clearly on the defensive here and why??? Because he knew that it would hurt John. If this happened in fic, I could pass it off, but I can't stand to SEE it! And if Flanigan is going to keep playing John this way... I just can't stand to watch. It hurts too much.

As I am a Canadian, it is assumed that I live in an igloo and know the French language. Well, half right (no, not the igloo half). Your title should be either: Mes Amis (my friends) or Mon Ami (my friend).

Anyway, you and I (and I suppose many others) are on the same wavelength:
"I would have gone anyway, you know."
OMG, John's petulance was so evident that it makes so much sense that he would urge Ronon to go with them. And, even though it's so twelve, I can't blame the poor guy, not with the rules the way they are. Still, with what you wrote, you've helped me flesh out a bit more of John's psyche for the Broken Ties tagfic I worked on yesterday. So, I'd like to thank your lovely neurons for their contribution. Unfortunately, I can't send them flowers or candy!

I'm hoping that you can give those RL issues a swift kick in the butt, because nobody should mess with our Neeve!

Fuzzy, warm hugs,
H.

neevebrody[info]neevebrody on September 22nd, 2008 08:16 pm (UTC)
Ah, mon ami, what would I do without you? You know I knew that, but I googled it and several places had the translation as 'my friend' - I just didn't realize the singular and plural "my" - well I did, I just didn't go with my instinct which was "mon ami" at first.

And John so asked Ronon to go and, of course, Ronon sees through these two. After all, in Outcast, Rodney asked Ronon to go with John...

I see it as a bit of petulance, but a lot of hurt, that was hurt I saw on John's face and the growing realization that something was spinning away from his control, that maybe he'd waited too late. In my slashy world for them in canon, I see this as the beginning of the end. John may not ever give up his feelings, but he may quit trying and that breaks my heart.

Ah, RL... it rarely attacks when you're strong enough and prepared to fight back. It's going to take a little while, but I'll be back on my feet and fighting again in now time.

*squishy hugs*

Anyways great job!
neevebrody[info]neevebrody on September 22nd, 2008 08:18 pm (UTC)
And that's the great thing about writing... we CAN wrap Rodney up and sit him right in the middle of John's bed. It just really threw me to see that opening sequence, what, two weeks after The Shrine.

Thank you!

Seriously...what other way is there to read John's stormy exit from Rodney's room in the morning?! Even the sick girl's bedside teasing...

Poor, poor John.

I was waving a little 'GO RONON!' flag at the end of the ep. And seriously, if Rodney keeps 'wussifying' himself to appease the lady's delicate sensibilities, then I don't think John will have too much to worry about...xcept maybe how much 'consollng' Rodney will need when it all runs to custard. :)
neevebrody[info]neevebrody on September 22nd, 2008 08:31 pm (UTC)
I expound a little more in my review (which hopefully I'll post soon) but look at Rodney's body language in that opening. He KNEW what he was saying was going to hurt John. I never thought I'd think of Rodney as an asshole, but the writers made me do it here and I'll never forgive them for that! Why did Rodney need to be so defensive... because (I think) they normally spend downtime together and he KNEW that telling John he was going with Keller would hurt his feelings (even speaking of best friends here).

And the way Rodney wants to "change" to make himself more palatable to this "woman" or that "woman"??? Rodney, honey, John loves you for who you are right here, right now!!!

"You're gonna turn on the ol' Dex charm, are you?"

Somehow I don't think Keller really needs that much charming from Ronon, I think she's already pretty taken with him.

Nicely done, I liked the premise. And the voices were spot on.
neevebrody[info]neevebrody on September 22nd, 2008 08:34 pm (UTC)
Well, to watch her, she's pretty taken with everyone - I think there was some definite chemistry with Kiryk.

Thank you. This was just may way of ridding myself of some of the hurt I felt for John in that opening sequence. And Ronon is no dummy, he knows a lot more than he says.

neevebrody[info]neevebrody on September 22nd, 2008 08:39 pm (UTC)
I only wished Rodney had played that opening scene that way. To me he was so defensive and I can't figure out why, except that he knew that going with Keller would hurt John's feelings. I hurt so much for John and this was just my way of getting it out of me.

And Ronon, tracking and being all smart and intuitive... so very hot!

mezzo_cammin[info]mezzo_cammin on September 23rd, 2008 03:15 am (UTC)
From the first sentence, when John hoped it would be Rodney at his door and not Ronon, to the end, where he hopes with every last hope that Ronon wins the lady...this was heartwrenching. And so good!

Did you notice Rodney's face at the very beginning, when his door opens without a knock of any kind? He seemed sort of resigned, like he expected to be teased or laughed at or something...maybe that's why he looked so unsettled when John left. That whole scene was so strange, within the context of the Keller/Rodney/Ronon arc, wasn't it? Strange from a 'canon' point of view, I mean, not from a slasher's point of view.

Anyway...I love how you write this. It's so vivid, and so real.
neevebrody: beeronthepier[info]neevebrody on September 23rd, 2008 01:02 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I'm really glad you enjoyed this - obviously written in a fit of melancholy for poor John.

You know, you're right and I hadn't put that spin on Rodney's actions yet, but it makes sense. He expected John to tease him (as John is wont to do) and obviously kept expecting it because he was defensive throughout the exchange. I had originally thought his look at the end was knowing that he'd hurt John, but now I think it might be that mixed with a little confusion, like what the heck just happened here? Thank you for that insight. It makes me feel much better about that scene.

And I love these characters so much, I do always try and make what I write true to them. I'm glad you think I succeeded here.

Ah that's perfect, fits in so well with the first scene. Are you going to do more?

That scene at the beginning was so slashy!! I've tried reading it with just a gen/friends slant but it just doesn't work. It looked like John was upset and that Rodney looked guilty but not knowing why.

I was also peeved that they wrote Rodney the way they did, Rodney who's been fighting wraith for years runs away screaming and fumbles with his gun and Jennifer fights them!!! WTF (pardon my french).

Then the end scene where they write Ronon as smiling and confident and Rodney as worried and disheartened, the writers almost telling the viewers that Ronons going to win Jennifers heart and Rodney has no chance, GAH! So annoying.

Anyway Rodney should be with John! That's all I have to say about that!! :-).

Oops rattled on there a bit, lovely story, more please.

Thank you! I'm planning a conversation between Rodney and John, but it's in the mulling over stage at the moment.

I've been dissatisfied with the way Rodney has been written since the late S3. They write him all over the map, no continuity of character whatsoever. It's terribly frustrating.

I honestly thought they could have lost both the beginning and ending scenes and had a great show. No, they have to muck it up with "relationships" which they really should not be doing at all!

So, is Ronon after Keller because he 'has intentions'? Or is he helping his buddy John? After that scene in the hallway, it could be just that he's a McShepper too! And I agree - John's face when he realised what Rodney was up to... He needs a hug! Thank you very much!
